What is Radiofrequency Microneedling (RF Microneedling)?

Who is a Good Candidate for RF Microneedling Treatment?

Radiofrequency microneedling is considered safe and effective for many people, including most skin tones and skin types. However, there are some who are better candidates than others for the treatment.

You may be a good candidate for this skin treatment if you are in good health, have realistic expectations for the procedure, and have any of the following skin concerns:

• Visible signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles
• Mild skin laxity (loose skin)
• Uneven skin texture
• Acne scars or surgical scars
• Enlarged pores
• Sun-damaged skin
• Stretch marks

You may not be a good candidate if you have a skin infection, are pregnant, are taking blood thinners, or have an active cold sore breakout. Before the procedure, make sure to avoid blood thinners (including alcohol) and any products containing salicylic acid.

The Radiofrequency Microneedling Procedure

The radiofrequency microneedling procedure is relatively simple. Dr. Andrews will start the procedure by cleaning the skin and then applying a topical numbing agent to the treatment area to ensure you’re completely comfortable. From there, the microneedling device will make micro-wounds in the skin. Simultaneously, the radiofrequency energy will penetrate and warm the skin, contracting it and stimulating collagen production. Patients may experience a mild prickling, but should not experience any pain.

The RF energy is able to penetrate deeper layers of skin than traditional microneedling, causing deep tissue remodeling while addressing irregularities on the skin’s surface. This allows for dramatic results in refreshing younger-looking skin.

The whole procedure shouldn’t take more than an hour. We typically recommend 2-4 treatment sessions with one-month intervals in between to achieve optimal results.

Aftercare

After radiofrequency microneedling, there is minimal downtime. You may have some pinpoint bleeding, redness, swelling, and bruising, but those will diminish within the first 24 hours. Some patients describe this as the feeling of a mild sunburn. You will be able to return to your normal routine within a day.

To ensure proper healing and the best results, you will want to apply ice packs to the treatment area, use sunscreen regularly, use a gentle cleanser, and avoid wearing makeup for the first 24 hours. You will see results 3-6 months after your final treatment as new collagen and elastin growth continues and your body’s natural wound-healing properties take effect. More radiant skin with an even texture can be enjoyed for many months after treatment.
