Try Now for FreeIf the extreme temperatures of a traditional sauna have been too much for you in the past, an infrared sauna can be a great alternative. With lower temperatures and more direct heat, the infrared sauna at Dr. Andrews Plastic Surgery can provide you with a safe and relaxing experience.
What is an Infrared Sauna?
Infrared therapy is a form of integrative medicine that promotes relaxation while relieving chronic pain and improving overall well-being. It’s a type of dry sauna, meaning it does not use water or steam to create hot air. Infrared heat causes your heart rate to rise, similar to moderate exercise, and causes you to sweat. Sweating flushes out toxins and impurities to relieve muscle tension, boost skin health, and enhance respiratory health. It has also been shown to improve cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and boosting blood circulation.
Infrared vs Traditional Saunas
Unlike regular sauna bathing, which uses intense heat to warm the surrounding air, infrared saunas use light panels and/or infrared panels to heat up your body directly and deeply penetrate the underlying tissues. Temperatures typically get to 110 to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. This is much lower than you would expect from traditional sauna heats, which usually falls between 150-195 degrees Fahrenheit. With lower temperatures, you can be much more comfortable while still achieving similar health benefits.

MEET DR. ANDREWSWho is a Good Candidate for an Infrared Sauna?
Most patients are good candidates for infrared sauna, but there are a few health issues and conditions that may make some people not ideal candidates for this treatment. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a severe health condition, it’s likely not an appropriate treatment for you.
Those who are good candidates for infrared sauna treatment include:
- Those with sore muscles
- Anyone seeking pain relief
- Anyone looking to unwind and relieve stress
- Those looking for the detoxifying benefits of the sauna
- Anyone wanting to kickstart weight loss or their wellness journey
The Infrared Sauna Procedure
The infrared sauna process is very simple, but there are a few things you’ll want to know before treatment. Before you go into the sauna, you’ll want to ensure you drink plenty of water. You will be losing water through your sweat glands, and you could easily become dehydrated. Feel free to bring water or a sports drink into the sauna while you relax to stay hydrated.
One of our specialists at Dr. Andrews Plastic Surgery will set the temperature depending on your needs. If this is your first time, we recommend starting at a lower temperature (around 110 degrees Fahrenheit) and then working your way up to higher temperatures with the more sessions you have.
How long you stay in the sauna depends on you. A session can range from 10-30 minutes, easily fitting into any busy lifestyle.
Aftercare
After the session is over, take your time letting your body cool down and return to its normal temperature. You may feel tired or lightheaded. Give your body time to recover and avoid strenuous activities for at least an hour after your session.
You may want to take a cold or lukewarm shower or bath to rinse off the sweat afterward and to help bring your temperature down. It’s also vital that you continue to drink plenty of water after your session to ensure you rehydrate your body. Patients immediately feel good after their sauna treatment, and many incorporate routine sauna and spa treatments to support their daily life.
