Due to genetics, hormonal imbalances, the use of certain medications, or specific medical conditions, some men develop enlarged breasts, also known as gynecomastia. It can show up at any age and can be embarrassing for many.
Male chest reduction can address this breast enlargement and provide you with the contoured, toned chest you want.
What is Male Chest Reduction?
Male chest reduction or gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening the chest and enhancing the chest contours. The procedure removes excess fat and glandular tissue either through liposuction, tissue excision, or both. Dr. Andrews will recommend the surgical technique that works for your specific needs.
Who is a Good Candidate for Male Chest Reduction?
The ideal candidates for male chest reduction include:
- Men whose gynecomastia hasn’t seen improvement with other medical treatments
- Men in generally good health with no medical conditions that may interfere with healing
- Nonsmokers
- Men with realistic expectations
- Men who have seen their breast development stabilize
- Men who are not happy with the size of their breasts and feel that they are too large
The Male Chest Reduction Procedure
The male chest reduction procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia. IV sedation or general anesthesia will be used. Once the anesthesia sets in, Dr. Andrews will either use liposuction, tissue excision, or a combination of both techniques.
With the liposuction technique, an incision will be made along the breasts, a cannula will be inserted to loosen the fat, and then a vacuum will be used to remove the fat.
With the excision technique, glandular breast tissue and excess skin will be surgically removed. The nipple and areola will also be repositioned to ensure the results look completely natural.
In some cases, both liposuction and excision will be used to remove breast tissue and suction out fat. Dr. Andrews may also reposition the nipple and areola during the excision portion of the procedure to give you your desired look.
Recovery
Dressings and bandages will be applied to your incisions after the gynecomastia surgery, and you will be given a support garment to wear to minimize swelling and support your chest as it heals. A small drain may also be placed under the skin to drain out excess blood and fluid.
After surgery, you can typically go home the same day but someone will need to drive you home. Before you leave, Dr. Andrews will give you instructions on how best to take care of your incisions and when to return for follow-up appointments.
You’ll need to rest as much as possible and lay at a 45-degree angle. You’ll also want to avoid strenuous activities until you are fully recovered. You will also want to avoid showering for the first few days, and even after that, you’ll need to limit yourself to lukewarm showers.
