What is Massage Therapy?

During a massage, a massage therapist rubs and kneads the soft tissues of the body, including the muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and skin. They will use different amounts of pressure and different movements to loosen your muscles, soothe specific areas of the body, and aid in relaxation.

At Dr. Andrews Plastic Surgery, we offer a wide array of types of massage, including everything from Swedish, deep tissue, myofascial, and lymphatic massage. Your massage therapist will help you determine the type of massage for your specific needs. They may even combine different forms of massage for a customized treatment.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses long, gliding strokes, kneading, and gentle circular pressure to relax the surface layers of muscle. It is the most widely recognized style of massage and typically the most comfortable choice for first-time clients. Because it promotes circulation and reduces overall muscle tension, it works well for stress relief and general relaxation. This is an excellent option for anyone who wants to enjoy all the restorative benefits of massage in a relaxing session without deep or intense pressure.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage applies slower strokes and firmer, more sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is designed to release chronic knots, adhesions, and areas of persistent tightness rather than to provide light relaxation. Many clients use it to address ongoing neck, shoulder, or lower back discomfort. It is a strong fit for athletes, physically active individuals, and anyone whose tension has not responded to gentler techniques.

Myofascial Massage

Myofascial massage, or myofascial release, targets the fascia, the thin web of connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles. Using sustained, gentle pressure and stretching, this technique works to loosen restrictions in the fascia that can limit movement and refer pain to other areas of the body. Sessions tend to feel slower and more deliberate than a traditional massage. It can be especially helpful for those recovering from injury, managing scar tissue, or dealing with stiffness and restricted range of motion.

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage, uses very light, rhythmic strokes to encourage the movement of lymph fluid and support your body’s natural drainage pathways. Because it helps reduce fluid retention and swelling, it is often recommended after major procedures like liposuction, tummy tuck, and body contouring. Many patients find it improves comfort during recovery and helps soften early scar tissue. It also benefits anyone managing general swelling, puffiness, or sluggish circulation.

Who is a Good Candidate for Massage?

Many people can benefit from massage. Whether you’re looking to improve your wellness, relieve pain, or loosen muscle tightness, massage therapy can be a great option for just about everyone.

A good candidate for massage therapy can be anyone looking to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Lessen pain
  • Reduce muscle tension and tightness
  • Improve overall immune system function
  • Speed up the recovery process

If you have a medical condition, like frequent headaches or a current injury, make sure you have a conversation with Dr. Andrews and your massage therapist to make your visit safe and comfortable.

The Massage Procedure

At the start of your massage, your massage therapist will ask you to lie down, and you may be asked to remove some clothing so they can access specific areas of the body. Once you’re comfortable, the massage therapist will begin using their hands to knead and rub specific muscles and tissues. If they notice any particular tense points, they may focus on those.

Your massage can last anywhere from 30-90 minutes, and you can add cupping, aromatherapy, or massage gun treatment. How often you come in for a massage is entirely up to you.

Aftercare

After your massage, you can return to your normal routine immediately. There is no downtime. You will likely feel much more relaxed, refreshed, and less stressed afterward. We do recommend drinking plenty of water, eating a light meal, and resting after your massage. Try to make it on a day when you don’t have to go back to work so you can fully enjoy the results and unwind for the day.
