New Injectable for Double Chins: Get the Facts

Varicose-Vein-Treatment-Los-AngelesDouble chins, one of the banes of many middle-aged men and women alike, have been addressed through a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures in the past. Now, a new treatment for double chins has been approved by the FDA that can sculpt the lower face with simple injections. Kybella is a solution that melts away fat cells and gives you a firmer, more youthful jawline with little discomfort and no recovery period needed.

What is Kybella?
Kybella is a solution manufactured by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals in Westlake Village, California. It contains deoxycholic acid, a molecule that effectively breaks down submental fat located underneath the chin. The fat is destroyed permanently, giving the patient a new facial profile. According to the manufacturer, Kybella has undergone 19 clinical studies involving 2,600 patients to prove its efficacy and safety.

Who is it for?
Kybella is primarily recommended for patients with moderate to severe double chins. Patients with moderate doubling tend to see the best results in fewer treatment sessions. Patients with severe doubling may require up to six treatment sessions, with each session spaced one month apart. Even with the full series of treatment sessions, results may not be as dramatic with this patient group.

How does it Work?
Injections of Kybella are placed directly into the chin area in very small increments. Patients may get a number of injections in one treatment, but the entire procedure usually only takes a few minutes to complete. After treatment, patients may experience some mild bruising and swelling, but they can usually return to their regular activities as soon as the procedure is over.

Are there Other Options?
Kybella is still a very new treatment that is only available from a handful of physicians across the country. However, patients can also see satisfying results for a double chin through proven liposuction procedures specifically designed for smaller areas like the jawline. This procedure uses a tiny tube inserted into the chin to loosen fat deposits and gently suction them away. The procedure is relatively quick to complete and most patients are back to regular activities within a day or two.
