What is the Brazilian Butt Lift?

The well-endowed backside has become a coveted feature for many women today, thanks to celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian flaunting their curvy derrieres to the world. A relatively new cosmetic surgery procedure offers women the additional fullness they want in their buttocks without the use of synthetic butt implants. Often referred to as the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) or buttock augmentation, this procedure has become a popular way to enhance the body contour.

What to Expect During Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery

Brazilian butt lift procedures require two steps:

Liposuction

First, liposuction is used to remove excess fat from areas in the lower abdomen, hips and thighs. These areas typically do not respond well to diet and exercise and often exist even if you have achieved and maintained a healthy weight. By removing this body fat, patients can simultaneously enhance other areas of their body and sculpt their figure. Using your own fat cells is also safer than buttock implants, which may be rejected by the body or create an unnatural result.

Using tiny incisions and a narrow tube called a cannula, fat cells are gently suctioned out of the body. The result is a smoother, leaner contour in the treatment area that will last as long as a healthy diet and exercise program is maintained.

Fat Grafting

Fat removed during liposuction is then purified and prepared to inject into other areas of the buttock, creating even more dramatic changes to the buttock contour. In the case of a Brazilian butt lift, purified fat is injected into various areas of the buttocks to create a fuller, rounder backside. The buttocks achieve a new contour without implants or incisions that leave residual scarring.

An autologous fat transfer is a minimally-invasive procedure that can be compared to other injectable treatments like dermal fillers. However, injected fat tends to last much longer than more dermal filler formulations, leading to long-lasting results without worry of an allergic reaction or the need for touch-up procedures. Our expert plastic surgeons use advanced fat transfer techniques to create exceptional results. By placing the transferred fat cells in different areas of the buttocks, we can achieve a natural look that give you the more shapely backside you have always wanted.

Butt Lift Recovery Period

The initial healing process after a BBL is about two weeks. During this time, patients should avoid sitting, since this will place pressure on the buttocks and could damage the transferred fat cells. Patients are often given prescription pain medication to ease discomfort during the first few days, and are also encouraged to use cold compresses to minimize swelling and bruising. A compression garment may also be provided. As swelling subsides and the fat settles, patients will gradually see the final results of their procedure, which includes an enhanced body shape with more noticeable curves.

Is a Brazilian Butt Lift Right for You?

A Brazilian butt lift may be recommended for any patient that has enough excess fat tissue in one area to transfer to the buttocks. Many women complain about their flat buttocks and lack of body contour. Selective liposuction and targeted fat transfer can give patients the buttock shape they have always desired. Because this is a surgical procedure, patients should be in relatively good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Since liposuction is not used as a weight loss strategy, patients should achieve a stable weight before undergoing the procedure.
