Surgical Procedures

Plastic surgery has grown exponentially in recent years, with an overall increase of 115 percent between 2000 and 2015. However, the types of procedures patients are opting for has changed over the years, as many new procedures have been introduced and older procedures have been perfected. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top five surgical procedures in 2015 were:

  • Breast Augmentation a total of 279,143 women opted to enlarge their breasts during this year
  • Liposuction there were 222,051 patients that decided to undergo this popular body contouring procedure
  • Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) as many as 217,979 patients made the decision to correct asymmetries or other cosmetic or functional concerns involving the nose
  • Eyelid Surgery as this procedure has become an effective way to open up the eyes and refresh the entire face, 203,934 patients sought this procedure in 2015
  • Tummy Tuck with 127,967 tummy tuck procedures performed this year alone, this procedure rounded out the top five plastic surgeries for 2015

Non-Surgical Treatments

Even as the numbers for plastic surgeries grew, the number of patients seeking non-surgical treatments increased even more. Botox injections particularly have seen an increase as both men and women have made this procedure their go-to treatment to turn back time on their appearance. With 6.7 million Botox procedures performed in 2015, this treatment is the top choice in anti-aging treatments today. The other top non-surgical treatments in 2015 included:

  • Dermal Fillers these injectable treatments came in a distant second to Botox, with 2.4 million procedures performed
  • Chemical Peels – this effective and customizable exfoliating treatment saw a five-percent increase in just one year with a total of 1.3 million procedures performed
  • Laser Hair Removal – more men and women are tossing out their razors in favor of longer-lasting laser hair removal, with 1.1million procedures performed in 2015
  • Microdermabrasion – the second exfoliating treatment to make the list. There were 800,340 microdermabrasion procedures performed during this year alone

Men vs. Women

As demand for these treatments has increased overall, men, as well as women, are now coming in for procedures. Men made up 13 percent of all patients seeking plastic surgery and eight percent of patients scheduling non-surgical cosmetic treatments. The most popular surgical procedures for men included:
